FALL COLOR-MINO 紅葉‐箕面

We visited Mino - Northern part of Osaka to view the beautiful fall colors of maple trees.  Many of the trees were as beautiful as these photos.

箕面に紅葉を楽しみに行ってきました。こんなきれいな写真が撮れて幸せです。

1984 1Q84

I skimmed through the 3rd in a series of books titled"1Q84" written by Haruki Murakami.  In Japanese, 1Q84 has the same sound of 1984.  I have 1984 by George Orwell but have never finished reading. 

1Q84の３巻目を読み終えた。この本に興味を持ったのは、ジョージオーエルの1984をまだ読み終えていなかったからだ。なんとか、1984を読み終えたいとは思うけどさていつになるやら。

Open - Andre Agassi オープン アンドレアガシ

I try to buy a book as a souvenior for myself when I visit the States. I

picked up this book recently because it looked easy to read. Once I opened the book, oh, my goodness, he writes as if he is talking. That means it will take longer to finish reading. However, it turned out to be quite readable. I learned how Agasi ended up playing tennis. I could not believe Steffi Graf married Agassi. Anyway, I feel happy for Agassi. It is very important for a person to have a right partner in your life.

アメリカに行く度に自分へのお土産として本を買うようにしています。アメリカで買うほうが安いからですが。やさしくて早く読めるものを選びます。今回選んだのは、テニスプレーヤーのアガシの本。読み始めてびっくり。いくら易しいといえど、しゃべり言葉で書かれているのには閉口。が、読み続けていると結構読める本でした。ずけずけと余り良からぬことを実名で書いて、それも、彼の性格でしょうか。いずれにせよ、自分の大好きな人と一緒になれて本当に良かったです。

San Francisico Airport - Sunrise

Sunrise from Sea Front Park where there are many airport hotels in San Francisco.  An aircraft is just landing.  Some times, two aircrafts are landing in a few minutes distance.  It is a very busy airport.　The bridge on the background is San Mateo Bridge crossing San Francisco Bay.

サンフランシスコ空港ホテルの立ち並ぶシーフロントパークからの日の出です。ちょうど１機の飛行機が着陸するところも撮れました。同時(１分程の間隔で）に２機着陸していることもありました。とっても忙しい空港です。背景の橋はサンフランシスコ湾をまたぐサンマテオ橋です。

Cabo San Lucas - Changing

Cabo San Lucas has a beautiful ocean view.  Many people are attracted to come here.  As a result, Cabo is changing.  So many time-share hotels and buildings are being built at the beach and on the hill.  It is getting ugly in sight.  I hope the authorities will control the view of nature while developing the land.

カボサンルカスは海の美しさから多くの観光客を引き付け、その結果、ホテルの乱立で醜くなってしまいました。海辺真近にこんなにもたくさんのホテルが立ち並び、丘にもいたるところにホテルやビルが立ち並ぶようになりました。できれば、政府が規制して景観と自然を守って欲しいものです。

CABO - SUNRISE

Yellowfin Tuna - キハダマグロ

Along with the Marlin, we were able to catch a small Yellowfin tuna.  We brought the fish to a new Sushi shop near the Hacienda Dock in Cabo.  They arranged five different sushi and sashimi dishes for us.  They were all so good.

カジキの他にキハダマグロも釣れたので、新しくできたカボのハシエンダドックの近くの寿司レストランに持って行った。カリフォルニアロールとスパイシーなメキシコ風味が混じったお寿司やカルパッチョ合計５種を準備してくれた。日本ではとても味わえないお寿司。おいしかったし、やっぱり日本料理はほっとする。

Blue Marlin クロカジキ

Marlin fishing is fun, but difficult. 

Marlin has such beautiful features.  When it jumps up and down, we can enjoy the grace of the fish. On the other hand, it is very difficult to find one.  It is also difficult to catch because when a fish is hooked, it tends to go far away.  Or, even worse, it goes down deep into the sea.  That is the toughest part of the fishing.

This year, I asked to try and catch a Marlin during our fishing trip in Cabo San Lucas.  After a long ride, a Marlin was hooked. I reeled in hard.  Then the Marlin fought back and went far away.  It jumped up and down showing off its gracious body in the air.  The captain of the boat, Mario, helped me by moving the boat closer to the fish.  At one point, the fish was very close to the boat, then the Marlin went down deep toward the bottom of the sea.  When it went down deep, no one could help, but I continued trying to reel in the line.  It was so hard because the fish was so heavy and stayed down so deep.  All of this fight wore me out.  Everyone said," Reel, reel!".  Manuel, the deck-hand, helped me pull the pole up.  "Pull back hard and reel down".  Suddenly, the pole became light, and the line went slack.  The fish went away.  The fighting lasted for about  15 minutes.

カジキマグロ釣りは楽しいけど難しい。難しいから楽しい。カジキがフックに捕まって暴れている様は、カジキには申し訳ないけど、優美だ。カジキはなかなか見つからないので、一日が坊主で終わることも多々ある。もう一つ難しいのは、もうすぐ釣れると思ったら、急にズルズルーと沖に逃げて暴れだす。一番困るのは、海の底深くに逃げてしまう。追いかけていくわけにもいかない。カジキ釣りこそ釣りの醍醐味だ。

と、言うわけで、今回のカボサンルカスでの釣りはカジキ釣りをお願いした。酔い止めの薬のおかげで、長い間眠っていると、「カジキ」だ。「クロカジキだ。」と、起された。必死でラインを巻き上げたけど、相手は重たいし、強い。カジキがボートのすぐそばまで引き寄せられたと思ったら、ズルズルとラインを引っ張って沖へ逃げて行く。相手は、はるかかなたで、何とかフックを外そうとバタバタ暴れている。それが美しい。キャプテンが、ボートをカジキに向かって動かしてくれ手助けしてくれる。ところが今度は案の定、海の底に隠れてしまった。デッキハンドのマニュエルが釣り竿を引くのを手伝ってくれた。「引いて、巻いて、引いて巻いて」と頑張っているうちに、竿が軽くなった。クロカジキが逃げた。１５分間の戦いだった。あーあ。

It was close to the time for us to go back, when another fish got hooked.  This was a big blue Marlin again.   MyD fought.  As with mine, this fish went back, went down and went back.  MyD was worn out.  Manuel helped him.  Manuel is a big strong Mexican fisherman.  Still, he had to work hard.  None of us could help.  Finally, the captain, Mario, came down to help him.  It took 2 hours before Manuel finally got the Marlin to the boat.  Manuel was completely exhausted.   But he won!

 I want to fight with a Marlin one more time.

釣りを諦めて帰ろうと話している時、又、カジキが引っ掛かった。今度は、MyDが活躍する番だ。私の時と同じく、カジキは、遠くへ行ったり、海の底にもぐったりして、MyDを困憊させてしまった。代わりにマニュエルが頑張ってくれた。ところが、強いメキシコ人のマニュエルでしてもすぐに釣れない。へとへとにさせられているのは分かっても我々も疲れて助けられない。ついに、キャプテンのマリオが来て助けてくれた。それでも釣れない。２時間ほどの戦いの後に、ようやくマニュエルが釣りあげた。マニュエルの勝利だった。大変な釣りだった。

　

Cabo San Lucas カボサンルカス

We are back to this beautifull site, Cabo San Lucas.   We are staying at the luxurious Hacienda Encantada.  MyD will move to Marina Fiesta next week.  We love the place.  Of course, however, there are always challenges when coming to Cabo.  In return for breakfast, we are supposed to attend their sales presentation during our vacation.  They want us to spend a huge amount of extra money by so called upgrading our contract.  Every year, we need to fight with GBS, the reservation agency responsible for the timeshare owners. They provide us with arrangements irrelevant to the contract.  MyD has a nerve-breaking experience by explaining his contract to the guy over the phone.  Such an ordeal seems to always be a part of our prepartion for the vacation in Mexico.  Forgetting about the trouble, we will enjoy our stay here.

この美しいカボサンルカスにまたやってきました。ハシエンダエンカンターダでの宿泊です。贅沢な施設ですが、実は私はあまりお気に入りではありません。町の中心部から離れすぎていて、シャトルバスも２時間に一本しかないので不便この上なしです。特に釣りから帰ってきた時、すぐにシャワーにかかってゴロンとできない遠さが耐えられません。それに、毎年、お決まりのように、トラブルがあります。いわゆる、セールストークに付き合せられ、下手すれば、巨額の金額の契約にサインをさせられます。それに、タイムシェアのオーナーになったからと言って、何ら特別な扱いを受けるわけでもなく、頭痛の種が増えるだけです。GBSという、タイムシェアオーナーの予約センターは法外な料金で部屋をアレンジしてくるので、GBSと話しするときは契約書を片手に話しなければなりません。契約書がいかに重要か日本人の私には良い勉強になります。にもかかわらず、またやってきたカボサンルカス。きれいなカボを満喫するぞー。

AFGHAN GIRL アフガニスタン人

I have just finished a book about an Afghan for the first time in my life.  This story is written by an Afghan refugee high school girl in the U.S.  I did not know that there was an ordinary household life in Afghanistan as you can expect in Japan, or anywhere else.  What is funny is that they also had a match-making marriage, which we had in Japan generations ago.  She used to have an ordinary and actually a wealthy life there.   Her life was destroyed when the author stepped on a mine and when Taliban bombed her house.  I also learned how difficult it is to be helped by the World Relief Organization.  Without her strong commitment, energy and courage, she and her mother could not have been selected as refugees.  I hope for her happiness in the U.S..

MyDの友人、Ed & Chrisの家にお邪魔している時、写真の本が目に付いた。今まで、アフガニスタンについて読んだことがなかったので興味を引いた。読むとなんと、アフガニスタンにも普通の家庭があり、普通の暮らしがあった。裕福な家庭で育った一人の女の子がある日地雷を踏んで足を失くし、その上に、彼女の家がタリバンに爆撃を受けた時からすべてが変わった。ワールドリリーフに最終的には助けられたものの、難民としして認められるまでの過程は簡単なものではないことを知り驚いた。この本は、今、難民としてアメリカに住むこの女子高校生が書いたものです。彼女が幸せになりますように。

HEARST CASTLE ハースト城

We visited Hearst Castle.  It is impressive that one person can create such gorgeous and huge buildings,  and doing so while using lavish material from all over Europe.  What was more impressive is how childhood experiences  affect a person's life later.  Mr. Hearst visited Europe when he was around ten with his mother.  After that, he had a strong longing feeling toward Europe.  The castle is the realization of his dream. 

Talking about childhood experiences, MyD was taken for an airplane ride by a neighbor when he was ten or 11.  After that, he always wanted to fly.  This is why he changed his occupation from a teacher to a pilot.  He materialized his dream as well.  I believe children had better to have as many experiences as possible.

カリフォルニアのハースト城を訪れた。金持ちとは言え一個人がこんなにも豪華な邸宅を築くなんてさすがアメリカだと思った。何よりも感心したのは、いかに子供時代の経験が大切かと思い知らされた。ハースト氏は10歳の頃母親に連れられてヨーロッパに旅し、そのころからヨーロッパに対する強いあこがれを持ち続けたとのこと。それをこの邸宅を作ることによって実現したとのこと。子供時代の経験が人を変えることで言えば、MyDも10歳か11歳頃に初めて近所の人に飛行機に乗せてもらったことからずっとパイロットになりたいと思い続けたそうだ。一時、教師になったものの、この子供の頃の強いあこがれが彼を動かしパイロットになって夢を実現させた。子供のうちに色んな経験をさせたいですね。

Mother with Momoko Osawa 大沢桃子と

On September 4th, there was a festival at my mother's Home. She missed watching the Japanese drum performance. She enjoyed watching it last year so much. This year, she was able to sit right in front of the stage where a beautiful and cute Japanese singer, Momoko Osawa, was singing. She came down to my Mom and shook her hands. I was very happy.

9月4日老健恒例のお祭りが催された。残念ながら、去年母が大好きだった和太鼓の演奏を見逃した。その代わり、大沢桃子さんの歌を最前列のど真ん中で見ることができた。その上、大沢桃子が、客席に歩いてきて、母と握手し一緒に写真を撮ってくれた。私は嬉しかった。母は....分かっていない。

Mom with Smile

Occasionally, my mom shows such a sweet smile. Her relaxed face gives me a great relief and makes me wish her dementia could be cured. I have a great regret in my mind. I should not have kept her at the hospital for more than one day when she fractured her rib. Then her legs would not have been so weak, and she would not have broken her hip. Then she would not have to use a wheelchair.  After all, rib could be cured by itself.

時々は母こんないい顔を見せてくれる。こんな顔を見ると私はほっとする。そして、認知症が治ってくれればいいと祈る。実は、後悔していることがある。肋骨を折ったぐらいで何日も入院させるべきではなかった。直ぐに退院させていれば、足もそんなに弱くならず、大腿骨頚部骨折などしなかっただろうと思うし、車椅子などのお世話にならなかっただろうと思う。肋骨の治療はサポーターをつけておくだけなのだから。残念で仕方がない。

Mother - Misery かわいそうな母

My mother suffered from Norovirus for a few weeks in late April. She was vomiting and had a fever. Even after she recovered, she was not allowed to go out for a walk. May 7, 2010, she was expressing acute pains when the staff of my mother's Home attempted to move her. She was diagnosed as having a fractured rib, and was hospitalized immediately. She was released from the hospital on May 11. We received another call from the Home on May 15. This time, she had fallen down when she tried to get up from her chair. She had fractured her hip (femur), and was hospitalized again. She was given a bolt inplantation operation.  She is now using a wheel chair. As a result of the rehabilitation program, she was finally able to stand up for a while on July 11, 2010.

四月の後半頃、母はノロウイルスにかかり、食べたものを吐き出したり熱を出したりした。回復しても、感染を恐れて、エレベーターを使わせてもらえず、ずっと、建物の３階に閉じこもっているしかなかった。恒例の、散歩はズーとお預けとなっていた。そんな中、５月７日老健のスタッフが母を動かそうとすると非常に痛がったと連絡があった。病院に連れて行くと肋骨骨折と診断され即入院。５月１１日に退院。5月15日に又、老健からの電話で、母が椅子から立とうとしてこけたと連絡を受けた。大腿骨頚部骨折との診断、即入院。5月19日に手術をし車椅子の生活に。しかしながら、リハビリをしっかりすれば歩けるようになるとのことで、先ずは立つ練習。母が、立ち上がった写真を7月11日に撮れた。

Flying Tiger Reunion

This is the party at the Flying Tiger Reunion. I like this dancing part of the party. People are so cheerful and lively (in spite of their ages).

フライングタイガーの同窓会。ディナーの後はお決まりのダンスパーティー。私はこのダンスタイムが大好きだ。皆、とっても元気で思いっきりダンスするので私は顔負け。何とか、負けじと私も頑張って踊っています。

Old Faithful Geyser

This is my first time to see hot spring coming out of the ground and shooting up high.  The duration of shooting up is only for a minutes or so.  The period from one shooting to another was only 10 minutes to 15 minutes.  Normally, however, it erupts once every 55 minutes or so.  Because of a recent earthquake, it erupted about every 10 minutes.  It was an interesting show. 

大地からお湯が吹き上がる様子を今まで見たことがありません。吹き上がっている時間はほんの数分です。一度、吹き上がると次まで通常は55分も待たないといけないそうですが、我々が見に行ったときには、たったの、10分程のの間隔で何回も吹き上げていました。最近、地震があったそうで、そのため、地下活動が活発になっているとのことでした。

Wine Train, Napa ワイン列車での夕食

This is the wine train where we had dinner while the train was moving up to north through the wine country (vinyards) of Napa Valley.  That sure was a great dinner!   

 ナパでは、ワイン電車に乗って夕食を頂きました。ブドウ畑が広がるナパバレーを電車はゆっくりと進んでいきました。

They primarily make Cabernet Sauvignon. A red wine that is dry. 

主にカベルネ・ソーヴィニヨン（ソヴィニョン）(赤のドライワイン）を製造しているそうだ。

Napa Valley - Fans and Milkcartons at Winery

Fans were used when the temperature is getting close to freezing.  By circulating the air, the growers can keep the plants and the grapes from freezing. 

ブドウ畑で見られる扇風機。気温が下がってくると、扇風機を回しぶどうの木が凍らないように工夫しているそうだ。

Small milk cartons are placed around the base of newly planted grapevines. This protects them from animals like rabbits and deer, and also protects them from very cold weather.

ブドウ畑をみていると、こんな風に白いものが見られることがある。これも、生産者達の工夫で、ミルクカートンを利用して、苗木をウサギや鹿などの動物達に食べられないように守っているそうだ。それと、寒さからも守っているそうです。

ALCATRAZ アルカトラズ

We visited Alcatraz Island. Visiting a former prison island creates in me some complicated feelings. The Island is only 1.5 miles away from the city of San Francisco. Prisoners could see a similar view of the skyline of San Francisco like the photo below. It looks so easy to reach there. No wonder there were some inmates who attempted to escape by swimming. However, the currents created by the tides are very strong. No one was ever able to swim to shore. Those who tried were swept out to sea and drowned.

 
 
 
   

 

 

 

 

アルカトラズ島を訪ねました。ちょっと、元の監獄島を訪れるのは複雑な気持です。この島は、サンフランシスコの町までほんの2.4kmのところにあり、窓からは、下の写真に似た風景が当時も真近に見え、囚人にとって泳いで対岸に渡りたいという気持ちになったのも十分うなずけます。残念ながら、この島の周りの潮流は非常に烈しく、実際に泳いで脱獄を図った人も誰一人としてその夢を実現できた人はいなく、波に飲まれておぼれてしまったとのことです。

This is the landmarks of San Francisco.  The building which has a spear at the top is the Transamerica Pyramid. The building which looks like a chimney is called Coit Tower. 

サンフランシスコのランドマークを写してみました。天辺が尖っているのがトランスアメリカピラミッド。煙突のように見える建物がコイトタワー(英語の発音は、コイタワー）。

No Thongs at Pier 9 ティーバッグ 禁止

MyD found this interesting sign at Pier 9 in San Francisco. "No Thongs. Except on feet." I could not understand it without MyD's assistance. Thongs means T-bag swim ware . It can also means flip flops for your feets.

こんなサインをMyDがサンフランシスコのピアナインで見つけた。面白いという。何が面白いのか、MyDの説明を聞いてやっと分かった。 "THONG"とは女性のティーバッグ(ビキニ）と言う意味と履物（サンダルやビーチサンダル）と言う意味がある。ビキニで来るな、「ビーチサンダルならオーケー」と言うことだそうだ。なるほど。

SFO Observation サンフランシスコ空港を臨んで

I proudly took MyD to my favorite aircraft observation site in San Francisco, Sea Front Park along the San Francisco Bay. In spite of being a pilot, he had never been here before. I was happy to be able to take him to this place. 　

空港を離着陸する飛行機を眺められる場所の中で、私にとって最高の場所がここサンフランシスコ湾沿いにあるシーフロントパーク。長年パイロットとして働いてきたにもかかわらずMyDはこの場所を知らなかったので、私はちょっと誇らしげな気持ちでMyDを連れてきました。

Mom with Cherry Blossoms 母 - お花見もどき

My mom has cherry blossoms in her background.  She looks as though she was enjoying the blossoms.  But she was looking at something else.  Cherry blossoms do not mean anything to her any more.

桜を背景に撮った写真ですが、彼女にとって桜の花が何を意味するのかもう分かっていません。この時も実は、何か他のものを眺めていたのです。

Pink Mt. Fuji

We had already seen many different features of Mt. Fuji. However, we thought there should be some more. We had an idea. The idea was that the color of Mt. Fuji should be pinkish when the sun is rising. We decided to get up early and take a photo of pink Mt. Fuji. Yes, the color was slightly pink at around 6:48 on Jan. 7, 2010., reflecting the color of the sun on the white snow of the mountain.

山中湖に滞在中、沢山の富士山を楽しみました。が、未だあるはずだと貪欲に考えると有りました。日の出の富士山です。太陽は見えないけど、富士山の白い雪に日の出が反射する筈だと考えると、どんな富士山になるのか見るのが楽しみになりました。又もや早起きして富士山を撮ることにしました。正解でした。1月7日朝6時48分頃。とっても綺麗な淡いピンクに富士山が染まりました。ホテルの敷地から撮った富士山です。

We also enjoyed seeing the half moon at the top of Mt. Fuji on the morning when we had to leave.

ちょっと見難いですが、こちらは、富士山の頂上辺りに半月が見えますでしょうか。帰る日の朝空の富士山と半月です。

ついに、富士山とお別れです。帰る前にもう一度、富士山と山中湖と白鳥を撮りに出かけ、別れを惜しみました。バイバイ富士山。楽しかったよ。

Mt. Fuji at Five Lakes

Other than observing Mt. Fuji from Lake Yamanaka, we also visited four other lakes, which are located on the northern side of Mt. Fuji.  In particular, we were interested in seeing Mt. Fuji as shown on the back of the 1,000 Yen note.  This view was taken at Lake Motosu.

時間がたっぷりあったので、富士五湖をすべて回ってみることにした。特に、千円札の裏に映っている富士山が撮られた場所に行きたくなりました。それが本栖湖で撮られたとのこと。そんな場所に行けるだけで嬉しくなりました。いかがでしょうか。千円札の裏写真と比べてみてください。

Swans at Lake Yamanaka

After the excitement of watching the diamond Fuji, we went to the shore of Lake Yamanaka to take photos of swans. There, there was a local man who was feeding swans.  He taught us that the two closest swans had black beaks and they came from Russia.  

今度は富士山を背景に山中湖に浮かぶ白鳥の写真を撮りに行くと、そこで餌をやっている男の人が教えてくれました。ここに居る2羽の白鳥はロシアから来た白鳥ですよ。口ばしが黒いでしょ。

Away from the two, there was a flock of swans, at least 30. According to the local person, they live on Lake Yamanaka year round, and the color of the beak was orange.

二羽の白鳥から離れたところに30羽ぐらいの白鳥の群れがありました。先ほどの男性によると、これらの白鳥は一年を通じて山中湖に居るそうです。この白鳥の嘴はオレンジ色をしています。
