Christmas Decoration クリスマスの飾り付け

It is always so nice to see something inherited within a family.  I like these handmade Chrismas decorations.  I learned that MyD made these decorations for his mother, with the help of his father.  MyD's sister told me that their mother always wanted to have Christmas decorations like these. MyD's mother must have been so happy to have this present.  Now, these decorations are handed over to MyD's daughter. These are so cute. 

家族代々受け継がれ大切にしているものがあるってとてもいいですね。このクリスマスデコレーションも２世代受け継がれたものだそうです。実は、MyDのお母さんがクリスマスの飾りが欲しいといつも言っていたので、MyDとお父さんと二人で作ったものだそうです。そんな話をMyDの妹さんにしてもらいました。嬉しそうなお母さんの顔が目に浮かびます。それが、今、MyDの娘さんの庭で飾られています。それを見て、MyDの妹さんも懐かしく思いで話をしてくれました。電飾のものもいいですが、こんな手作りの飾り付けは家族への愛情がこもっていていいですね。

Electronic Dictionary 電子辞書

When we have some gadgets that help us a lot, we will feel ultra happiness.　My electronic dictionary is one of them. Today, computers and other products alike have all sorts of functions including a dictionary. Without having a dictionary, we are supposed to get by in reading foreign languages on the screen. However, having an electronic dictionary is much more convenient.  Dictionaries on the computer require changing screens back and forth and do not always provide proper translation.  I did bring a book version of a dictionary from Japan and tried to use it.  Unfortunately, I can no longer use it in my daily life.  It is just too bulky and too time consuming in use.  I love the gadget.  I have to write about the happiness of having a nice gadget.

私の辞書に乾杯。いい辞書を持っていると幸せな気持ちになる。辞書を引いても、言葉が見つからなかったり、意味がなさなかったりするとフラストレーションが募るばかり。アメリカにいて、新聞を読むと分からない言葉にたくさん出会う。そんなことになるとは、夢にも思わなかった。わからない言葉を飛ばし読みにすると、読んだ後、何が書いてあったのかさっぱり覚えていないという悪循環。日本から、分厚い、かつて、私の大好きだったリーダース英和辞典を持ってきたけど、やっぱり、電子辞書にはかなわない。リーダースの電子辞書を持っていて本当に良かった。いい辞書に乾杯。

Valentine's Day

Very pretty Valentine's cookies given by Karen, our neighbor.  Of course, they were homemade.  They are too cute to eat.

我が家では、可愛いガーベラの花でバレンタインデーを祝いました。


Beautiful wreathes were sold at a market.  On the following day, these items were replaced with Easter celebration goods.



スーパーではこんな可愛いリースが売られていました。しかしながら、翌日には、すべてバレンタインの飾り付けはなくなり、イースターのお祝いアイテムにすっかり入れ替わっていました。

No Thongs at Pier 9 ティーバッグ 禁止

MyD found this interesting sign at Pier 9 in San Francisco. "No Thongs. Except on feet." I could not understand it without MyD's assistance. Thongs means T-bag swim ware . It can also means flip flops for your feets.

こんなサインをMyDがサンフランシスコのピアナインで見つけた。面白いという。何が面白いのか、MyDの説明を聞いてやっと分かった。 "THONG"とは女性のティーバッグ(ビキニ）と言う意味と履物（サンダルやビーチサンダル）と言う意味がある。ビキニで来るな、「ビーチサンダルならオーケー」と言うことだそうだ。なるほど。

I found the bedroom decoration at Marina Fiesta and Hacienda Encantada hotels in Mexico to be funny.  They put swans formed from folded towels everywhere...one on the bed, one on a shower room towel hanger and one on the edge of a bath tub.

メキシコのホテル（Marina FiestaやHacienda Encantada)でのベッドメーキングはちょっと変わっています。タオルで鳥を折り紙のように作って部屋のあちこちに置いてお客様を歓迎してくれます。

ED & CHRIS'S HOUSE

We visited MyD's friends, Ed & Chris's house on the from family camp out site in Three Rivers to MyD's daughters houses in Orange County.  Their house wad designed and built by themselves.  It is in Shell Beach and has a beautiful ocean view.  The hedge in fron is Rosemary. 
恒例のThree Riverでのファミリーキャンプ場を後にして、MyD娘達が住むOrange Countyに帰る途中、MyDの友達のEdとChris夫妻のお家に立ち寄らせて頂きました。自分達で設計して建てたお家はShell Beachと言うところにあり、家から海が見えとても綺麗なお家でした。手前に見える緑はローズマリーです。

Rice Pounding 餅つき

"Some type of a Japanese traditional event is being conducted in the neighborhood. Would you like to come and see what it is?" This is what MyD came back and reported to me on December 30, 2008.「マンションの前の家の庭で日本の伝統的な行事らしいものが行われているよ。ちょっと来てみてくれない？」とMyDが私を引っ張り出した。日付は2008年12月30日。

Oh yes, it is one of the traditional events that we seldom see today. It was rice pounding to make rice balls by a neighborhood family. They let MyD pound. It was a fun experience.

本当だ。今やとっても珍しい年末行事が行われていた。ご近所様のご家庭でお餅つきが行われていた。MyDも餅つきに参加させて頂いて楽しかったです。ありがとうございました。

With a Special Neighborhood for the Memory Impared

This signage caught my eyes during our drive between El Segundo and Redondo Beach in Southern California. I imagine this is for the elderly people's facility, so called "Group Home" in Japan. The phrase is gracefully avoiding a direct word such as dementia.

ロス空港近くのEl Segundo から南下してReddondo Beachに向かっていく途中このような看板を見つけた。いわゆる日本で言う「グループホーム」のことかしらと想像している。言い回しが気に入ったので車窓から撮った。

Signs of Early Summer in Alaska

Some flowers are blooming in Alaska. Purple lupines usually bloom in June. However, this year, they were late and I was still able to see some of them when I was there this month, July. The white puffs are the seeds from dandelions.
アラスカでも花が咲くのですね。パープルルーピンと言う花は通常は6月に咲く花ですが、今年は開花が遅く私がいた7月でも未だ咲いていました。白いのは有名なタンポポの綿玉です。


Wild roses were also in full bloom. This is the rose which becomes rose hips.

ワイルドローズも真っ盛り。この実がローズヒップになるんですね。

Sorry for this blurred photo. But at least I was able to catch one Mayfly. There were so many mayflies in the evening of July 6. A swarm of Mayflies was flying over the Kenai River when I was there. I was also told that this year their flight was late.
In most areas of the U.S they hatch and swarm in May. Thus the name Mayfly. In Alaska, they usually fly along the river bank in June. They stay close to the river, and do not come near the house. They have a very short life span. To me, it was a surprise to see flies in Alaska, where it is not hot. This fly seems to be different from what we see in Japan (both in appearance and behavior). According to some information, they fly only over clean water. A swarm of Mayflies means they are mating. Male Mayflies fly up and down. Females fly through the swarm on a "fly-by" according to a website http://www.onthelake.net/fishing/mayflies.htm. Next time when I see them, I will watch them closely to see if there are those flying up and down and those who are flying through.

ピンボケの写真で申し訳ありませんが、必死で捕らえた一匹のメイフライ（カゲロウ）です。7/6の夕方にこのメイフライの大群がキーナイ川に沿って飛んでいました。今年はメイフライの飛来も遅かったそうです。通常は 五月に孵化し一団となって飛ぶのでMAYFLYと呼ばれるそうです。カゲロウは水面を飛び人が住む家の方にやってきません。彼らの命はカゲロウのごとく儚いところから、日本名が付いたそうです。英語の語彙力不足の私は、アラスカのように涼しいところで何故ハエがと思いました。このフライは、日本でいういわゆるハエとは違いました。このフライは綺麗な水を好みます。一群となって飛ぶということは異性を求めているとのこと。オスは上下に飛び、メスは群れの中を突き進んで飛んでいくとのことですが、次回、この時期にアラスカに行った時はは、彼らの飛び方をよく観察してみます。

Height Comparison on Kid's Day こどもの日の背比べ

In Japan, May the 5th is a national holiday, celebrating boy's growth. We have several other national holidays during this week. Because of so many holidays close together, it is called "Golden Week". On this occasion, my family gathered and had a picnic. It is one of customs to check the height of kids on May the 5th according to a Japanese nursery song. Well, an old ex-young boy and my niece were comparing their heights by standing back to back. This old ex-young boy was fearing that he might have been beaten by my niece who recently has been growing quite rapidly. If you see close enough, you might recognize this former young boy's heels are slightly up. 　Or, is it a wrong judgement?

今年のゴールデンウィークの5/4に私の家族は皆集まってピクニックをしました。思いがけず沢山集まって楽しかったです。すると、♪柱の傷はおととしの～を思い出させるようなことを姪とかつての「男の子」はやっておりました。ひょっとして、負けるのではないかと、この元少年君はドキッとしたようです。姪っ子の背丈がここ最近ぐっと伸びてきたからです。ようく写真を見ると、かつての少年君のかかとがほんの僅か上がっているような気がしますが..... 気のせいでしょうか。


This is a warrior's helmet which is displayed for May the 5th to celebrate a boy's healthy growth. This set of decorations was inherited from one family to another within my relatives this year. I put this photo up to record memories of my sister and her son, the former owning family of the helmet.

この兜、私の母が妹の息子のため買ったそうです。私は、全く知りませんでしたので、写真で始めて拝見させてもらいました。今回、私の別の甥っ子の子供が二人とも男の子なので、その子達に兜を上げることにしました。この写真は記念のために撮ったものですが、記録に残す為ブログに載せることにしました。

Let's Go Padres! 頑張れーパドレス！

I was lucky to observe a historical baseball game between the Padres and the Rockies at Petco Park on April 17,2008 in San Diego. The game lasted for 22 innings, ending at 1:21am for 6 hours 16 minutes. The game was tied for most of the time with the score only 1-1 until the 21st inning. At one o'clock a.m. on Friday, we could not estimate when the game would be over and finally left. While walking towards our car, we learned that the game had ended with the 22nd inning. The Padres lost 2 - 1 on an unearned run.

幸運なことに4月17日木曜日サンディエゴでパドレス対ロッキーズ戦をぺトゥコ球場で観戦した。この試合は歴史に残る長時間戦となり、なんと22回1:21迄試合が続き6時間16分の試合となった。ゲームは21回まで1対１の同点で、金曜日の午前1時に一体いつまで続くか分からず遂に球場を去ることにした。駐車場の車に向かって歩いているときに試合が、22回で終了したことを知った。パドレスのエラーで2-1で負けた。

In Japan, there is a rule to stop playing at 12th-inning, no longer than 5 hours from the beginning of the game, or no new inning after mid-night. I did not know there was no such rules in the U.S.. 　Seeing a score board of 30th inning was a kind of threatening for me.
日本では野球は通常12回で終了する、あるいは、ゲーム開始から5時間を越えないとか夜の12時を回ってから新しいイニングを始めないとか決まりがあるとのこと。しかしながら、アメリカではそのような決まりがないとは知らなかった。スコアーボードの30の数字を見てぞっとした。

As time went by, there were fewer spectators. However, people got more excited in order to get an attention of a cameraman, so that they would be on the big screen.

時間が経つにつれ観戦客の数が少なくなってきたものの、応援がますます熱狂的になった。カメラマンの注意を引きビッグスクリーンに映ろうと皆な頑張った。

I tried myself. You can see me on the big screen if you are lucky.

私も頑張った。かすかに映っているのが私。目がよければ見える筈。

A Film Star?

Is this a film star? Well, it must be only I who think in that way. Can you imagine that I put this photo as a wallpaper on my PC? It is quite appealing. This photo was found in his senior high school album. We, in Japan, do not take senior graduate photos from this angle. It would be fun if students in Japan were shot as if they were stars like this. Well, this is MyD.

この人ってスター？なんて考えるのは私だけなんでしょうね。この写真をなんと私のパソコンの壁紙に使っているんです。結構びっくりします。この写真は高校卒業アルバムに載っていました。日本ではこんな角度からの写真って学校で撮ってもらえませんよね。でも、こんな風に日本の学生もスター気分で撮らせてもらえたらいいですよね。実はこの方、MyDです。

Girls Day - March the 3rd

March the 3rd is Girls Day in Japan. Girls get their own special celebration for their good health and growth. Unfortunately, it is not a national holiday, and we do not get the day off. Our custom is for parents on the mother's side to give a set of dolls to a grand daughter. My parents did not dare to observe this tradition because they did not approve of my sister's marriage in those days. Therefore, learning that my sister owned the set of dolls shown in the photo was a surprise. These dolls can be very expensive. She is neither rich, nor living in a large house. Regardless, she has one full set of dolls for her daughter and displayed that every year for Girls Day. I can only imagine how happy she was to have a daughter and how deeply she was determined to raise her daughter by following Japanese traditions soundly. The dolls were no longer displayed at her apartment, since her daughter has grown up already. This year, the doll set is currently on display in the Japanese room of my condominium. It is part of our efforts to help my mother remember our traditions, customs, and holidays. Without visual reminders like this, she no longer remembers the special days we always celebrate.


3月3日はひな祭り。女の子の健康と成長を祝う特別の日ですが、祝日でないのが残念です。女の子へのお祝いに普通は、女親の両親が孫娘の為にお雛様をプレゼントするものですが、当時、私の妹の結婚に反対した両親は、そんなお祝いなど以っての外でした。ですから、妹が写真のような立派な五段雛を持っていたのは驚きでした。五段雛なんて贅沢で、置き場所にも困ります。当時、余裕のなかった妹が五段雛を購入するなんて、よっぽど娘を持って嬉しかったんだろうなと思いました。又、恵まれなくても、しっかりと子供を育てようという彼女の心意気を伺い知ることもできます。そんな姪も成人して、ここ数年このお雛様も飾らなくなってしまったそうです。そこで、今年は、私のマンションに飾ってもらうことにしました。母がこれを見て、少しでも季節の変わり目を感じ取り、祝い事を思い出してくれればと思いました。

Mail Box

This is a charming mailbox found at Sandy's house. It is a simple mailbox, but there seems to be various laws relating to maiboxes in the U.S. It was a big surprise to me.
サンディの家に可愛いメールボックスがあった。単なるメールボックスながら、アメリカでは、色々ルールがあるようだ。

Can you see a flag is up? When the flag is up, that indicats there are some outgoing mails inside. This is just like door-to-door delivery service by a postman.
旗が立っているのが分かるでしょうか。このように旗が立っていると、メールボックスの中に郵便物があるので、郵便屋さんに持っていって下さいよと言う印です。宅配と同じですよね。


The flag is not up, indicating no outgoing mail.
このように旗が立ってないときはメールボックスの中に郵便やさんに持っていってもらう郵便物はないですよと言う意味だそうです。


　　　　　　　　　　　　
No one, other than a U. S. Postman, may place any item into a mailbox.
It is against the law to place anything other than U.S mail into a mailbox. DHL, UPS, and FedEx can not place anything into a mailbox. The mailbox can also be used for outgoing mail. If a flag is raised up, the mailman will open the box and collect any outgoing mail. For newspaper delivery, a different box needs to be installed. In some areas, newspapers are not placed into a box. They are tossed onto the driveway as the delivery man drives by.
米国の郵便屋さんしかメールボックスに物を入れられないことになっている。 もし郵便物以外のものを入れると法律違反となる。DHLやUPSやFedExもメールボックスに何も入れられない。このメールボックスは、郵便を出すときにも使える。写真のように旗を立てておくと、郵便屋さんが郵便ボックスを開けて郵便物を持って行ってくれる。新聞配達には新聞ボックスを別に備える必要がある。地域によっては、新聞ボックスに入れられることなく、車からポイっと庭に投げ入れられるだけの地域もある。

Christmas Present

Christmas presents from the U.S. Towel sets with Christmas decoration are so hard to find in Japan. So I am happy to get those sets.
アメリカからのクリスマスの贈り物はクリスマス用のタオルセットです。日本ではなかなか見つけにくいので喜んでいます。
