Windmills at Tehachapi

These are windmills for wind power generation located near Tehachapi in California. The area lies in a low mountain pass between the Central (San Joaquin) Valley and the high desert near Mojave. Pressure and temperature differences between the two areas create consistant winds to power the windmills. This was my first time to see so many windmills with my own eyes. I was quite impressed by the U.S. eco-energy generation effort. The U.S. has been quite infamous in terms of the global effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, because they did not sign the Kyoto Protocol. Having that stereo-type, the sight of windmills here changed my view about the U.S. They are attempting to decrease the burning of fossil fuels.

Graffiti on Roads?

I found something peculiar located on roads in the U.S. Are these cracks, or is it graffiti on the road?

They stretch across the road. In fact, these are pressure sensing lines for traffic signal lights.

For example, when a vehicle enters a left turn lane, it will pass over a sensor which sends a signal for the traffic light to turn red for opposing traffic and provide a blue/green arrow for the car that needs to turn left. If no one enters the left turn lane, that arrow remains red and the light for opposing traffic remains blue/green. ( In Japan, this would apply to right turns.)
These sensors are also installed on side streets that feed into main streets. If there is no traffic on the side street, the signal for the main road will remain blue/green. Only when a vehicle or pedestrian needs access from a side street will the light for the main street turn red. Buttons are provided on light poles that pedestrians may push to receive a green "walk" light. Traffic on the main street will stop less frequently, thus saving on fuel and brake wear. An eco-friendly solution.

This sensor was found at an exit from a San Fransisco Airport hotel. The traffic light turns green, allowing the bus to exit, only after a bus has passed over the sensor. When there is no bus needing to exit, that light remains red and the light for traffic on the street remains green. Thus, traffic flows smoothly.

I hope this type of sensor will be introduced in Japan. There are many traffic lights installed on all busy streets in Japan. For instance, there are at least 13 traffic lights in 5 kilometers (approximately 3.1 miles) between my condominium and my office. If I drive at legal speeds, I have to stop at many traffic lights even though there is no crossing vehicle or pedestrian traffic. This is especially true at night and early in the morning. Installation of these sensors on our roads would help a lot to reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption in Japan.
