Cut carbohydrate! 炭水化物の摂取を削減しよう！

This book, "Glucide Off for Health" has been my eye-opener.  I was diagnosed as having "Non-alcoholic fatty liver" last July.  As a remedy, my doctor advised me to exercise a lot.  However, I daily jog a mile.  I play tennis whenever I can.  I was shocked. This book gave me a good hint.

この「糖質オフ健康法」という本がひょっとして私を助けてくれたかもしれない。去年の7月「脂肪肝」と診断された。その改善法として「運動を沢山しなさい。」ということでしたが、私は日ごろから1マイルのジョギングをしている。できるときは、テニスもしている。アルコールも飲まない。何故、脂肪肝になったのか府に落ちない。そんな時にこの本に出会い、これだと思った。

IPAD MINI

I bought an iPad mini in Jan. 2013.  I think Apple should have released this size of iPad much earlier.   I had been waiting for a long time for the size of iPad to become smaller and lighter.  I was using an iPod touch instead.  I was so happy to obtain such a handy iPad.
1月にアイパッドミニをついに購入した。重さ、サイズとも適度なもので、アップルはもっと早くこのサイズのものを出すべきだったと思う。小さ過ぎるのを我慢しながらアイポッドタッチを使っていた。どんなに嬉しいことかご察知頂けると思う。

The 4th Anniversary 4周年

We were able to spend time together for ten months out of 12 last year.  That is the longest span of days we have shared our lives.  The only time we were not together was when I was in Japan to wait for my interview to obtain a permanent visa to the States. 

去年は初めて一年のうち10か月をともに過ごしました。残りの2か月は米国永住権を取得するためのインタビューの為、私一人日本にて待機しておりました。

Christmas Decoration クリスマスの飾り付け

It is always so nice to see something inherited within a family.  I like these handmade Chrismas decorations.  I learned that MyD made these decorations for his mother, with the help of his father.  MyD's sister told me that their mother always wanted to have Christmas decorations like these. MyD's mother must have been so happy to have this present.  Now, these decorations are handed over to MyD's daughter. These are so cute. 

家族代々受け継がれ大切にしているものがあるってとてもいいですね。このクリスマスデコレーションも２世代受け継がれたものだそうです。実は、MyDのお母さんがクリスマスの飾りが欲しいといつも言っていたので、MyDとお父さんと二人で作ったものだそうです。そんな話をMyDの妹さんにしてもらいました。嬉しそうなお母さんの顔が目に浮かびます。それが、今、MyDの娘さんの庭で飾られています。それを見て、MyDの妹さんも懐かしく思いで話をしてくれました。電飾のものもいいですが、こんな手作りの飾り付けは家族への愛情がこもっていていいですね。

食事ができてる Eating Meal

食事が運ばれて来たら、母は自動的にお吸い物の豆腐をすくって口に入れ飲み込んだ。良かった。食事だと分かっている。そして、食べるという行為ができた。

Immediately after her meal was served, my mother brought tofu (soybean curd) to her mouth out of a bowl of transparent Japanese soup and she swallowed.  What a relief to see.  She reacted spontaneously to eat and the function of swallowing is working.

1日300人との出会い SEE 300 PEOPLE A DAY?

この写真の母のように、公園に出ていけば、1日に300人もの人に出会うチャンスがあるかもしれない。先日の高齢社会に関するセミナーで、講師の方が、老後を健康に暮らす極意として、3000-300-30という概念を紹介された。
If you go out to a park like my mother, there will be a chance to see as many as 300 people a day.  "3000-300-30 is the key for people to live healthy lives for a long time."  This key was introduced during the lecture on Aged Society the other day.  This means:

• 3000文字を読み
• 300人の顔を見て
• 30人と挨拶又は話を毎日しなさい　と、言うことだ。

• Read 3000 words every day.
• See 300 people every day.
• Greet or talk to 30 people every day.

認知症の兆候？Symptom of Dementia?

振り返ってみれば、母は一生懸命私にシグナルを送り続けていたのだろう。自分自身が何かおかしいと。ただ、私はそれに気が付かなかった。
When looking back, my mother was sending me lots of signals for her potential of developing Alzheimer's Disease.  I just did not recognize them in those days.

恐らく12年位前だったと思う、数えれば、ちょうど75歳ぐらいになる。母がこんなことを言っていた。「この頃、私、物覚えが悪なって目医者さんが言っていること何回も何回も聞き直さなあかん。メモをとっても忘れる。お医者もイライラしている。一緒に付いて来てくれへんか？」

It was about 12 years ago when she was around 75.  She told me,  "My memory is getting worse.  I can not remember whatever my eye doctor explains to me. I try to take a note, but I can not catch up.  The doctor seemed to be frustrated by me.  Will you come with me?"

超高齢社会 Extremely Aged Society

「パンパカパーン、パンパカパーン」昨日はご機嫌が良かった母です。暑い毎日ですので、公園への散歩は夕方4時半以降です。ご機嫌のいい時は、こんな風に、♪パンパカパーン♪と繰り返します。そんな母を連れる私も気づいてみると61歳。あと四年で前期高齢者が、後期高齢者を看る高齢者超高齢社会の一員になります。

Everyday it is so hot in Japan.  Over 95F.  After 16:30, however, we have some nice shady areas in the neighborhood park.  I take my mother out there for a walk in her wheelchair.  Her ♪Pan-paka-pan. Pan-paka-pan♪ starts.  She utters this phrase when she is in good mood.  I am happy to hear the sound.  She will be 87 years old soon.  I am 61.  Both of us are now elderly people.

Day Light at 10:00 pm in Alaska

At around 10:00 pm, we usually go to bed.  When we went to our bedroom, the sun was still shining in through one of the windows at the north.  Very bright.  Right now, we have 19 hours day time.

夜10時頃になるべく寝るようにしています。ベッドルームに行くと、北の窓から、こんなに太陽の光がさんさんと差し込んでいるではないですか。もう、夜の10時だというのに。今日現在、19時間の日照時間だそうです。夏至まで、もうすぐです。

Blood Pressure Monitor 血圧計

I bought a blood pressure monitor which can be connected to an I-phone or an I-Pod and all results are automatically recorded on each equipment.  I bought it for MyD's birthday present.  After the birthday, I opened the package and tried to check myself to see if it works ok or not.  Shocked!  More than it worked, the figure I got was extraordinary. My blood pressure seldom went up more than 130 in my life.  However, the reading said like 158, or 187 etc.  I thought it was something strange. I used our old one.  The figure was as bad as the one I had just checked. Ever since then, I am using the equipment more often than MyD does.  Although it was meant for a birthday gift to MyD, in a way, it worked out well. It helped me to realize the criticality of my blood pressure.


写真のような血圧計をMyDの誕生日祝いに買った。I-Podなどに繋げて使い記録がすべて自動的に残るので大変便利だ。MyDが使う前に、自分で使ってみた。何に驚いたかというと、うまく機能したというよりも、表示された数字に驚かされた。つぶれているのかと思ったけど、何回やっても恐ろしい数字が表れる。今まで、血圧には自信があり、130を超えたことはほとんどなかったのに、出てきた数字は、158や187。古い血圧計で測ってもやはり同様の数字がでてくる。それ以来、血圧計は、MyDのものというより、私のものになってしまった。誕生祝に買った血圧計によって自分の血圧が以上であることを知らされて、良かった。

Pot Pads 鍋敷き

These are my favorate kitchen items. Our neighbor, Norm, gave them us.  A pot pad in the shape of halibut and a tooth pick case made from a spruce tree. Of course, all of these are hand made by Norm.

私のお気に入りのキッチン用具を紹介します。ご近所のノームさんの手作りのものでハリバット(オヒョウ）の形の鍋敷きと爪楊枝入れです。

These are small pot pads. These are hung below a kitchen cabinet close to the stove.  They are very handy.  

こちらは小さな鍋敷きです。。キッチンキャビネットにぶら下げているので、料理している際にちょこっと必要な時にお手軽に使えます。                    

Rabits ウサギ野郎！

I believe many people love rabbits because they are so cute.  Besides, I was born in the year of rabbits.  Therefore, I have many reason to love rabbits.  However, living with the wild life in Alaska, I have to hate them.  I do remember the story of Peter Rabbit. He was punished because of eating the vegetables of a farmer. Now, I understand why the farmer was so upset. 




たいていの人はウサギは可愛いので大好きだと思う。実は私もウサギ年のせいか憎めない。ところが、ここアラスカで野性的な生活をしていると、ウサギは厄介者であることが分かった。ピーターラビットが農場の野菜を盗んでやっつけられる話が身に染みて分かる。

Muir Woods National Monument

We visited Muir Woods National Monument, which is 12 miles (19km) north of San Francisco.  There, lots of Redwoods are protected.  They are very tall. 
ミュアーウッズ国定記念物を訪れました。サンフランシスコから１９キロ程のところに有ります。レッドウッドは写真のように非常に高く成長します。

San Francisco Airport

I am back at San Francisco Airport, observing the aircraft departing and landing across the bay.  I have no memory of seeing two aircraft landing together or departing together.  It is certainly a busy airport.  In this photo, two United-continental airplanes are landing and one British Air aircraft is waiting for departure.

私の大好きなサンフランシスコシーフロントパークに戻ってきました。忙しい空港と知っていながら、二機の飛行機が同時に離着陸している様子を見た記憶はなかったと思います。この写真では、ユナイテッド・コンティネンタルの二機が着陸中で、ブリティッシュエアーが離陸指示待ちの状況です。

Mother

Here is my cute little mom.  It's been about one year since she moved from a different home to the current one, which is very close to my home and to my sister's. As you see, my mother's teeth are almost gone and she can no longer wear her false teeth.  She rejects when a helper tries to put the teeth into her mouth.  She also rejected her dentist after she had moved. Therefore, there was no dental care for about 3 months.  As a result, only a few teeth remain in her mouth, because teeth keep coming out due to no dental and oral care.  Now she looks like a real old woman. Her lips are sucked inside.  Poor her.  On this day, she was in a good mood.  She was doing whatever I wanted her to do for her work out at a nearby park from the home.



久しぶりに可愛い母親の登場です。以前の老健から近所の老健に引っ越ししてかれこれ1年近くたちます。その間に、母親の様子もずいぶん変わりました。一番残念なのは、母親の歯がなくなって唇が口の中に入り込み、いわゆるおばあさんらしくなってしまったことです。こちらの老健に引っ越ししてから、入れ歯を入れるのを拒否してもう入れ歯が入れられなくなったからです。それに付け加え、歯医者さんに口腔ケアをしてもらうのも3か月ほど拒否したため、ますます、歯がぼろぼろになり、もう残っている歯は２～３本です。写真を撮った日は母のご機嫌が良く、私の言ったことをよく聞いてくれました。この写真は、母がキラキラお星さまをしているところです。ちょっとでも、運動になると思って。気休めですが。

Electronic Dictionary 電子辞書

When we have some gadgets that help us a lot, we will feel ultra happiness.　My electronic dictionary is one of them. Today, computers and other products alike have all sorts of functions including a dictionary. Without having a dictionary, we are supposed to get by in reading foreign languages on the screen. However, having an electronic dictionary is much more convenient.  Dictionaries on the computer require changing screens back and forth and do not always provide proper translation.  I did bring a book version of a dictionary from Japan and tried to use it.  Unfortunately, I can no longer use it in my daily life.  It is just too bulky and too time consuming in use.  I love the gadget.  I have to write about the happiness of having a nice gadget.

私の辞書に乾杯。いい辞書を持っていると幸せな気持ちになる。辞書を引いても、言葉が見つからなかったり、意味がなさなかったりするとフラストレーションが募るばかり。アメリカにいて、新聞を読むと分からない言葉にたくさん出会う。そんなことになるとは、夢にも思わなかった。わからない言葉を飛ばし読みにすると、読んだ後、何が書いてあったのかさっぱり覚えていないという悪循環。日本から、分厚い、かつて、私の大好きだったリーダース英和辞典を持ってきたけど、やっぱり、電子辞書にはかなわない。リーダースの電子辞書を持っていて本当に良かった。いい辞書に乾杯。

Life in Alaska

I am enjoying life in Alaska a lot.  Since I came back from Florida, the temperature here is around 22F during the day time.  It is warm inside the house. We go cross-country skiing every day.  It is fun.  The other day, Thursday, March 8th, we saw a real beautiful green aurora. It was spectacular.   I was so excited.  Today, on our way home, the Kenai mountain looked so beautiful.  Oh my goodness, what a wonderful life I am leading!                                 

5 Years Later

We visited Sandy & Tim in Florida this year again.  I am on one of their turtles.  Five years ago, they were small.  Now, they have grown up so much that they can carry me on thier back.

今年もフロリダのサンディとティムを訪ねました。5年前には、ずいぶん小さかった亀たちもすっかり大きくなり、いまや、人間を乗せて歩けるようになりました。すごいですね。

Valentine's Day

Very pretty Valentine's cookies given by Karen, our neighbor.  Of course, they were homemade.  They are too cute to eat.
















手作りのバレンタインクッキーをカレンさんから頂きました。いつも本当に上手に作られるので感心します。


We celebrated our Valentine's day with these lovely flowers, Gerbera.
















我が家では、可愛いガーベラの花でバレンタインデーを祝いました。


Beautiful wreathes were sold at a market.  On the following day, these items were replaced with Easter celebration goods.



スーパーではこんな可愛いリースが売られていました。しかしながら、翌日には、すべてバレンタインの飾り付けはなくなり、イースターのお祝いアイテムにすっかり入れ替わっていました。

FROZEN WATERFALL 凍った幾重もの滝

On the way to Anchorage from Sterling, there were lots of frozen waterfalls along the Turnigan Arm of Cook Inlet.  In addition, I saw some dall sheep there.   It was incredible to see such beautiful wild nature along the road near a big city like Anchorage.
















スターリンと言う町からからアンカレッジへの道中、クックインレットのターニガンアーム沿いで、凍った段の滝が道路脇にたくさん見られました。ドールシープの群れにも出会いました。少し行けばアンカレッジという大都市の近くの道路沿いに、こんな美しい自然があり野生の動物が生息しているとは驚きです。
