ALCATRAZ アルカトラズ

We visited Alcatraz Island. Visiting a former prison island creates in me some complicated feelings. The Island is only 1.5 miles away from the city of San Francisco. Prisoners could see a similar view of the skyline of San Francisco like the photo below. It looks so easy to reach there. No wonder there were some inmates who attempted to escape by swimming. However, the currents created by the tides are very strong. No one was ever able to swim to shore. Those who tried were swept out to sea and drowned.

 
 
 
   

 

 

 

 

アルカトラズ島を訪ねました。ちょっと、元の監獄島を訪れるのは複雑な気持です。この島は、サンフランシスコの町までほんの2.4kmのところにあり、窓からは、下の写真に似た風景が当時も真近に見え、囚人にとって泳いで対岸に渡りたいという気持ちになったのも十分うなずけます。残念ながら、この島の周りの潮流は非常に烈しく、実際に泳いで脱獄を図った人も誰一人としてその夢を実現できた人はいなく、波に飲まれておぼれてしまったとのことです。

This is the landmarks of San Francisco.  The building which has a spear at the top is the Transamerica Pyramid. The building which looks like a chimney is called Coit Tower.
